Alain Bertaud is an urban planner specialized in land use and spatial development issues. Over the years, he has been analyzing the interaction between land markets, land use regulations and urban shape. He has developed a number of indicators to monitor the spatial development of metropolitan areas. In his work as adviser to municipalities on land use issues he tries to bridge the gap between urban economics and operational city planning.
He has been advising cities on land development issues in many parts of the world. Since the ideological and economic changes brought to the world since 1989, he has been studying the spatial transformation of cities that were formerly under a command economy. This includes cities of the former Soviet Union, of Central and Eastern Europe, and of China.
Alain Bertaud is currently an independent consultant working mainly on land use issues in the cities of China and India. He retired in 1999 from the World Bank. While with the BankĄ¯s urban department as principal urban planner, he worked in the design of policy and urban projects in Russia, Central Europe, Latin America and Asia. Previous to his work with the World Bank he worked on a number of assignments around the world for the preparation of urban investment strategies and urban structure plans. He also worked as an urban planner on the first master plan for New York City in 1968-69.
Alain Bertaud graduated in Architecture from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1967.
