Mr. Marcel Rommerts is a Principal Administrator, Directorate-General for Energy and Transport in the European Commission in Brussels. He is responsible for the urban transport domain inside the European Commission and his work encompasses both policy development and research.
Marcel is currently preparing a new European Commission policy paper on urban transport that is planned for adoption in September 2007. This is one of 21 priority initiatives of the European Commission in 2007. He has developed the Commission's CIVITAS Initiative and has helped to prepare political and legislative actions in the frame of the "Citizens Network".
Marcel has been responsible for the development of work programmes for EC-supported research and demonstration actions with a value of over 500 Million Euro that covered, among other things, urban pricing; mobility management/TDM; clean vehicles and alternative fuels; travel behaviour; and public transport organisation. Before joining the European Commission he held jobs related to urban transport planning in the Netherlands.
Marcel holds degrees in Transport Engineering and in Business Studies and Engineering. He is a regular speaker at conferences all over world. Marcel is member of the US National Academy of Sciences/TRB Committees on Transportation Energy and Alternative Fuels and on Transportation Demand Management. He is also member of the scientific committee of the China Urban Sustainable Transport Research Center in Beijing.
